Man arrested in Westminster honeytrap sexting scandal

Flirtatious WhatsApp messages target men in political circles

A man has been arrested in connection with the Westminster "honeytrap" sexting scandal as police conducted a warrant at a London address. The scandal involved flirtatious WhatsApp messages from individuals identifying themselves as "Charlie" or "Abi," targeting at least 12 men in political circles starting from September last year.

Former MP William Wragg resigns Conservative whip

Former MP William Wragg resigned the Conservative whip after admitting to sharing the phone numbers of fellow MPs with a man he met on a dating app out of fear. Wragg expressed regret for his actions and stepped down from his positions within the Commons Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee and the 1922 Committee, choosing to surrender the Conservative whip.

Investigation ongoing into unsolicited messages

The arrest, made under suspicion of offenses under the Online Safety Act and harassment, is part of an investigation by the Met's Parliamentary Liaison and Investigation Team following reports of unsolicited messages sent to MPs and others. The Metropolitan Police confirmed in April that they were looking into the reports of these messages, but did not disclose the age of the arrested individual as per their standard procedure.
