The leadership contender would reverse the National Insurance rise and halt green taxes on energy bills, giving more than £150 back to consumers.

Ms Truss told Trending In The News on Sunday: “People across Britain are struggling with rising prices and I am absolutely determined as Prime Minister to help them by lowering tax, and delivering the tough change we need on the economy.

“I have the experience, the plan and resolve to deliver that from day one in 10 Downing Street.”

She also set out a tough package of economic reform to support business – including overhauling business rates – and incentives to encourage more companies to invest.

To keep control of debt and spending Truss will hold a review of government spending and keep the size of the state in check.

Other measures will include paying off Britain’s £311billion Covid debt over a decade or more to allow more room for tax cuts.

She wants the Covid debt to be treated like Britain’s Second World War debt, which was only paid off in full in 2006.

A senior source in the Truss campaign said: “Liz is the only candidate for PM with a a clear plan to get the economy moving and help hard-working families, and the only person with the experience and track record to hit the ground running straight away.

“This isn’t the time for someone untested to be given the keys to Number 10.”
