Labour to Axe Rwanda Asylum Scheme

Labour to Axe Rwanda Asylum Scheme

Failed Asylum-Seekers Sent to Rwanda

Just five failed asylum-seekers have been sent to Rwanda as Sir Keir Starmer gears up to axe the scheme. The cost to the taxpayer is £74 million per person.

Labour's Plan

Sir Keir Starmer argues that scrapping the Rwanda scheme will free up £75 million to combat the gangs facilitating small boat Channel crossings. Labour has pledged to scrap the plan "on day one" if they win.

Voluntary Departures

Trending In The News previously reported that two people took up a £3,000 offer to fly on commercial flights in a voluntary departure scheme. Three more have now taken the same route to Rwanda.

Cost and Challenges

The plan to relocate people has cost at least £370 million, according to the National Audit Office. Legal challenges and court orders have delayed the process, but the Safety of Rwanda Bill was finally passed in April.

Cracking Down on Small Boat Crossings

Sir Keir Starmer believes that scrapping the Rwanda scheme will help combat the gangs facilitating small boat crossings, with more than 13,000 people arriving in overcrowded boats since January.

Home Office Statement

When the first migrant was flown to Rwanda in April, the Home Office stated, "This deal allows people with no immigration status to be relocated to a safe third country."
