Labour MP Suspended a Year Ago Still Collecting Salary as Mystery Surrounding Suspension Persists

Labour Party Under Fire for Failing to Disclose Suspension Reason

Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, is facing criticism for not providing an explanation for the suspension of senior MP Nick Brown over a year ago. Brown, a former chief whip, had his whip removed in September 2022 and has been under investigation ever since. However, party officials are yet to reveal the cause of the suspension or when the investigation will conclude.

Mystery Surrounding Suspension Persists

Despite being suspended from the party, Nick Brown continues to receive a taxpayer-funded salary of £86,584. The suspension of the MP for Newcastle upon Tyne East, who served as chief whip under every Labour leader since Tony Blair, remains shrouded in secrecy. At 72, Brown is one of the longest-serving politicians in the party.

MP Brown Cooperating with Investigation

When initially suspended, Nick Brown stated that he was fully cooperating with the investigation. He explained that a complaint had been filed against him, which triggered the Labour Party's inquiry. While Brown is unaware of the specific details of the complaint, he continues to assist with the investigation while under administrative suspension.

Future of Veteran MP Diane Abbott Also Uncertain

The fate of another long-standing Labour MP, Diane Abbott, remains uncertain. Abbott was suspended in April for making comments suggesting that Jewish people do not experience racism. It is unclear when a decision will be made regarding her suspension.

The Guardian has reached out to the Labour Party for comment.
