SIR Keir Starmer’s closest aide sensationally quit today amid bombshell claims she was peddling rumours about Angela Rayner’s private life.

Carolyn Harris has resigned as the Labour leader’s parliamentary private secretary in the latest twist in the party’s bitter civil war.

It is understood that Team Rayner had demanded her scalp after blaming her for dodgy briefings.

Labour has been plunged into utter turmoil in the wake of of their electoral bloodbath.

As Sir Keir moved to sack Ms Rayner in his botched reshuffle on Saturday night, Ms Harris allegedly briefed scurrilous and baseless details about her private life.

The move sparked uproar among the deputy’s allies.

Falling on her sword, Ms Harris said it had been an honour to serve Sir Keir.

In a statement, the MP for Swansea East said: “It has been the proudest moment of my career to co-chair the campaign that saw Keir Starmer elected as Labour leader, and to serve as his PPS for the past year.

“Stepping back from this role is the right thing at this moment, coming as it does after some trying personal times and an ever-increasing workload as Deputy Leader of Welsh Labour.

“I have enjoyed every minute, and look forward to supporting Keir the best way I can in the months ahead.”

Sir Keir reshuffled his top team over the weekend following the dreadful local results for the party, where Labour lost hundreds of council seats.

But they managed to cling onto the London Mayoralty and a number of other top spots across the country.

Ms Rayner was shunted into a new role, but allies claimed she’d been promoted.

Lefties came out to slam the move, saying Ms Rayner’s Northern roots made her perfect for rebuilding the Red Wall.

But others on the far left of the party came out to demand Sir Keir’s scalp, and demanded he return to their extreme agenda under Jeremy Corbyn to win big next time.
