Keir Starmer branded two-faced hypocrite by 63 per cent of voters for stirring up Partygate row

SIR Keir Starmer has been branded a hypocrite by 63 per cent of voters for stirring up the Partygate row when he may have broken lockdown rules.

Most believe he breached Covid restrictions by attending a curry and beer party – and should quit if fined by police.

Alarmingly for Sir Keir 22 per cent of Labour voters believe he has been untruthful and 40 per cent think he has been two-faced

But the damning verdict will give Boris Johnson little cause for celebration, as 61 per cent say if the Labour leader quits, he must too.

The leadership crisis at the heart of British politics is laid bare in an exclusive Sun on Sunday poll.

It reveals both the PM and his Labour rival are viewed as dishonest by most British people.

A majority have already found both of them guilty of flouting rules which the rest of us were expected to obey.

STARM BREWING

Fresh blow for Keir Starmer as Labour bible the New Statesman dubs him boring

Four in ten say the PM’s birthday gathering was more serious than Sir Keir’s £200 curry bash being probed by Durham Police.

Richard Holden, Tory MP for North West Durham, said: “For a year, Starmer made lockdown breaches the centre-piece of politics and Labour have talked of little else.

“But Starmer’s boozy party in Durham, when he thought he was behind closed doors, have left him with a real hypocrisy hangover.”

Mr Holden, whose letter to Durham chief constable Jo Farrell helped to force a probe into the Labour leader, added: “Starmer has dodged question after question and tried to pull the wool over the eyes of the British public.

So it’s now hardly surprising that the people have already made up their minds that Sir Keir Starmer is two-faced toe-rag who pretends he’s holier than thou but does the opposite when he thinks no one’s watching.”

More than half of people — 52 per cent — are in favour of both police inquiries, according to the poll by Redfield and Wilton Strategies.

Only 34 per cent think they are a waste of time and resources.

But it is not the fact Sir Keir may have broken the rules that upsets most of those surveyed.

Half are more angry that he was dishonest about what happened or that he criticised Mr Johnson for similar actions to his own.

Some 52 per cent think he was wrong to criticise the PM when it appeared he did the same.

Alarmingly for Sir Keir, 22 per cent of Labour voters believe he has been untruthful and 40 per cent think he has been two-faced.

The majority believe that if the Labour leader is forced to quit, he will take several other political figures down with him.

Sir Keir has vowed to resign if he is fined over the currygate bash — and 54 per cent say he must.

But a further 58 per cent say his deputy Angela Rayner should go, too, while 57 per cent would want Rishi Sunak to quit as Chancellor.

Despite a huge number saying the PM would have to quit, an overwhelming 56 per cent accept he would be unlikely to do so.

Former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith said: “This poll shows that the public really don’t like politicians who fail to practise what they preach.”
