Illegal migration ‘has put NHS and schools under strain and weakened our communities’

ILLEGAL migration has put the NHS and schools under strain and weakened our communities, the immigration minister will claim today.

Robert Jenrick will take a swipe at “humanitarian nimbys” who refuse to take their fair share of migrants — saying they risk destroying social cohesion further.

The minister will say: “We have entered an age of mass migration which requires Western governments to re-establish the integrity of their borders.

“Unprecedented illegal migration has placed our public services under strain, weakened community cohesion and set back integration efforts.

“Deterrence must be restored.

“Those that make illegal journeys must know that it will be a futile endeavour.”

Ministers last month attempted to woo councils into taking extra migrants with huge cash sums – as several MPs launched fights to stop camps being set up in their areas.

It comes as the Illegal Migration Bill heads back to the Commons tomorrow – where ministers have tacked on several amendments to appease MPs on both the Tory left and right.

Mr Jenrick will say today to critics of the major small boats bill: “These politicians grandstand and virtue-signal their supposed generosity.

“But there is nothing virtuous about making generous offers at the expense of others when it comes to housing supply, waiting lists and the tax burden.”

“Labour’s approach of just tweaking the system from the edges just won’t work to deter people from making the dangerous crossing,” he is expected to argue.
