Home Secretary Suella Braverman was probed over allegations she leaked sensitive details on Northern Ireland Protocol

SUELLA Braverman was investigated over allegations that she leaked sensitive details about the Northern Ireland protocol, Trending In The News on Sunday can reveal.

Although she was cleared it was the third time this year that Ms Braverman has been subject to an official Cabinet Office leak inquiry.

Several other Cabinet ministers were also investigated by the Propriety and Ethics team over the Northern Ireland leak, but they did not find out who the chatty rat was.

But one Whitehall insider alleged “all fingers pointed to Suella” after the leak promoted her hard-line Brexit credentials – but no evidence ever backed up those claims.

In May this year, a story in The Times revealed Ms Braverman – who was the Attorney General at the time- had approved the scrapping of large parts of the Northern Ireland Brexit deal.

The sensitive legal advice had been discussed at a top level meeting of Cabinet ministers including Suella, Priti Patel, Liz Truss, Michael Ellis and Michael Gove.

The meeting had been chaired by then PM Boris Johnson.

Ms Braverman was sacked by Liz Truss 11 days ago after using a personal email to send secret plans to cut the deficit by £14 billion with a new Growth Visa.

And last week, after Rishi Sunak rehired her, it was reported she was also investigated over claims she leaked a sensitive story involving Britain’s security services back in January – but was also cleared.

A source close to the Home Sec said: “These allegations are completely without basis.

“This leak was not down to the Attorney General or anyone working closely with her.”

A Cabinet Office spokesperson said: “We do not comment on alleged leak investigations.”
