Home Secretary challenges PM over plans to hand thousands of student visas to India

Home Secretary Suella Braverman has confronted Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in front of the whole Cabinet over his proposal to grant thousands of student visas to India. Braverman expressed her discontent with the idea of inviting more migrants, especially after the 1.2 million UK arrivals last year.

The PM's controversial plans

Last week, it was reported by Trending In The News that the Prime Minister is preparing to approve plans to issue thousands of student and business visas in anticipation of a significant trade deal with India. The article also revealed a split within the Cabinet on the matter.

A firm stance

However, during the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Chancellor Rishi Sunak reaffirmed his determination to proceed with the plan, arguing that it would benefit the UK in the long run. Sunak is currently preparing for the largest trade deal since Brexit and will be attending the G20 summit in New Delhi this weekend. He may return with a signed agreement in just a matter of weeks.

A personal project for the PM

Insiders have disclosed that securing a trade agreement with India holds great importance for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as it would exemplify the advantages of the UK's decision to leave the European Union. The UK aims to negotiate reduced tariffs on whisky and cars, as well as access to India's lucrative financial and legal services market.

Backlash from Tory MPs

Despite the potential benefits, some Conservative MPs are vehemently against the idea of opening the door to further migration. The proposal has ignited anger and frustration within the party ranks.
