HARDWORKING households are paying more than a million pounds in tax over their lifetime, researchers claim.
The £1.1million figure is for a combined income of £60,000 over 40 years’ working and 15 years’ retirement.
And even the lowest income families on around £19,000 a year will pay £480,000, the TaxPayers’ Alliance figures say.
John O’Connell, the alliance’s chief executive, said: “With the tax burden at a 70-year high, typical families are now tax millionaires.”
Influential Tory backbencher Robert Halfon has called on Chancellor Rishi Sunak to look at ways of raising funds which do not hit families who are already facing soaring bills on food, fuel, household energy and National Insurance.
He warned the Tories should “go back to the drawing board” on taxes — or face being hit hard at the polls.
He wants the Government to look at windfall taxes on big business, particularly oil companies who he says have been “raking it in over the past couple of years”.
Mr Halfon has also called for a possible increase in capital gains tax.
He said: “We can raise funds for the NHS without hitting low income workers.”
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has admitted “taxes are never popular” but insisted ministers are committed to cutting them.
Labour’s shadow levelling up secretary Lisa Nandy warned “it’s just simply not possible for a lot of people to survive” if their tax burden grows.
