Labour’s Emily Thornberry said there was no excuse to run up exorbitant hotel bills at the taxpayers’ expense

The Tory MP served as Cop26 president under Boris Johnson.

The gig saw him travelling the world lecturing people on carbon emissions.

Figures uncovered by Labour show he made his 66 trips from October 2020 to September 2022 and spent £220,817 on travel and stays.

This included five-star hotels costing up to £255 a night in Berlin, Saigon and Seoul, South Korea.

Labour’s Shadow Attorney General Emily Thornberry said: “No one’s disputing the importance of face to face diplomacy.

“But that’s no excuse to run up exorbitant hotel bills at taxpayers’ expense.

“Alok Sharma either doesn’t realise we’re facing the worst cost of living crisis for decades or he just doesn’t care.”
