FAMILIES face a £2,500 bill just to fit the pipework needed for eco-friendly heat pumps.
Five million households will have to pay a total of £12.5billion to go greener as current pipes are too small, industry experts have warned.
And that is on top of the boiler cost, which runs into thousands.
PM Boris Johnson will soon urge everyone to swap to heat pumps or hydrogen boilers in the next decade to meet emissions targets.
But the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council has warned many homes must have floors ripped up to replace 15mm pipes with 22mm ones for the new boilers.
The council’s boss, Stewart Clements, said: “The UK has one of the most diverse building stocks.
“Attempting a one-size-fits-all solution is unrealistic.
“The different heating systems that circulate heat and hot water in our homes are not adequately covered by strategy and policy work.”
