Proposed crackdown on hardcore protest movements
Hardcore protest movements such as Just Stop Oil and Palestine Action may soon face a ban akin to terror groups, according to proposals set to be unveiled next week. A report by the Government’s adviser on political violence is expected to recommend restriction orders on extreme protest groups.
Similar treatment to organisations linked to terrorism
The report, authored by John Woodcock, suggests creating a proscription category specifically for these groups, akin to organizations associated with terrorism. This category could be used to restrict the activities of groups that engage in criminal offenses to influence government decisions or public discourse.
Possible reasons for ban
Activities such as property destruction, causing significant disruptions, or inflicting harm on individuals could be counted against these groups. If their actions disrupt democratic institutions or businesses, and are persistent in advancing a political or ideological cause, they could be added to the banned list.
Sanctions and restrictions
Potential sanctions may include limiting the group’s ability to gather and raise funds. Lord Walney, as John Woodcock is formally known, emphasized the need to make it harder for activists of these groups to plan crimes, similar to the approach taken with banned terror groups.
Additional recommendations on protest regulations
Mr. Woodcock's report is also likely to suggest amending regulations to empower the police to impose a blanket ban on face coverings as a condition for protests. This measure would require reasonable grounds to believe that coverings might be used by protestors to conceal their identity while engaging in illegal activities.
