Carrie Johnson has been ‘unsung star of G7 show’ in first major role as PM’s wife

TRUE-blue Carrie Johnson has been an unsung star of the G7 show in her first major role as wife of the Prime Minister, insiders said last night.

Newly-married Carrie has been busy entertaining the spouses of the other world leaders — and has helped to cement the warm relations between their nations, they say.

Loyal Carrie, 33, has also looked the part — while underlining her green credentials — with a string of elegant outfits from designer clothing hire websites.

She crowned her perfect summit by leading an outing to the Minack Theatre in a £595 blue jacket and £395 flared matching trousers, rented for £80 each.

Carrie has been accompanying Jill Biden — on her first overseas trip as US First Lady — France’s Brigitte Macron, Canada’s Sophie Gregoire Trudeau and Italy’s Maria Serenella Cappello.

The only male partner in the G7 line-up in Cornwall is Joachim Sauer, husband of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

An insider said: “Carrie has been absolutely terrific throughout. It’s barely two weeks since she was married and she has thrown herself heart and soul into the demanding job of being the Prime Minister’s wife.

“She has such a friendly, easy-going nature and all the foreign guests have taken to her and been knocked out by her marvellous hospitality.

“There’s no doubt she’s gone a long way to foster diplomatic relations between the world’s most powerful leaders. Boris will undoubtedly be immensely proud of what she has achieved for the country in the past few days.”

Insiders say much of Carrie’s work has gone unnoticed as it was carried out at private dinners and receptions inside the swish Carbis Bay Hotel, which is the highly-secure venue for the summit.

For yesterday’s trip, Carrie took the partners to a rocky outcrop just a few miles from Land’s End.

The group were entertained by a performance from 50 Cornish children at the open-air Minack, which is perched on cliffs high above the Atlantic.

The kids put on a music and dance show called Ocean World about plastic pollution of the seas. They had no idea they were going to be performing for a VIP audience until the motorcade flanked by police outriders swept in.

Miranda Penhaligon, who lives near the theatre, said: “It was mad. We are very isolated out here and to see all these cars is ridiculously amazing. We are just so excited. It’s like a party.”

Environmentalist Carrie, whose hair was tied back in a bun, was thrilled with the show’s theme. Cleaning up the oceans and protecting wildlife are personal passions.

Theatre director Zoe Curnow said: “All these young people were singing their hearts out to these really influential global leaders.

“The children were telling them afterwards, ‘You can make a difference’.”
