Brits can apply to sponsor a Ukrainian refugee NOW as website opens and Michael Gove unveils scheme

KIND-hearted Brits can now apply to host a Ukrainian refugee as the Government launched its long-awaited homes for heroes drive.

Unveiling the biggest sanctuary scheme since the Second World War, Michael Gove sent up a rallying cry for the public to open their doors.

Brits will be able to sponsor a Ukrainian refugee

A website for people to register their interest in hosting a Ukrainian went live this afternoon.

Levelling Up Secretary Mr Gove told the Commons: “The British people have already opened their hearts in so many way.

“And I’m hopeful that many will also be ready to open their homes and to help those fleeing persecution to find healing, prosperity and hope for a brighter future.”

Leading Tories Grant Shapps and Matt Hancock have already promised to put up a refugee, as has Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

Downing Street has effectively ruled out Boris Johnson taking one in No10 because of security reasons.

More than 2million Ukrainians have already fled their homes blown to smithereens by murderous Vladimir Putin.

Today’s new sponsorship scheme comes on top of an existing route for refugees with family ties to Britain to be fast-tracked here.

Brits wanting to host a refugee must already have one in mind initially, before it is expanded to match wannabe hosts with fleeing Ukrainians.

Mr Gove confirmed there will be no cap on the number of Ukrainians seeking sanctuary under the sponsorship route.

Both participants and refugees will be vetted and hosts will be paid a £350 “thank you” lump sum each month.

Hosts will have to guarantee for a minimum of six months but are not expected to provide meals.
