Workers take a stand
Reports suggest that British Steel employees in Scunthorpe prevented Chinese executives from their owner, Jingye, from entering key areas of the steelworks today. Police were called to the scene as tensions rose.
Parliament steps in
MPs approved emergency legislation to save British Steel's Scunthorpe blast furnaces after negotiations with Jingye broke down. The Government now has the power to keep the plant operational.
Government and opposition clash
While Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds accused Jingye of not negotiating in good faith, Conservatives criticized the Government for its handling of the situation. Shadow business secretary Andrew Griffith accused the Government of seeking a "blank cheque."
