Minister assures no more land giveaways
Technology Secretary Peter Kyle has reassured the public that Britain will not surrender the Falklands or Gibraltar, following the decision to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
Opposition raises concerns
Shadow Foreign Secretary Andrew Mitchell criticized the move, stating that no Conservative government would have made such a deal with the Chagos Islands, which he described as leaning towards Beijing.
Deal with Mauritius
The Foreign Office confirmed an agreement to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, with the UK and US maintaining a military presence on Diego Garcia for 99 years.
Parliamentary approval needed
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer may face opposition at home as the deal could require parliamentary approval.
Commitment to Gibraltar
Minister Peter Kyle also affirmed that Britain will not surrender Gibraltar, emphasizing the importance of national interests and regional stability.
