The Cabinet Office referred the former PM to police over claims friends and colleagues visited him at country retreat Chequers during the pandemic.

Former PM Boris Johnson says claims against him are ‘absolute nonsense’

He has threatened to sue the Cabinet Office and said: “It is ridiculous that elements in my diary should be cherry-picked and handed over to the police.”

Speaking in Washington DC, Mr Johnson said: “There is absolutely nothing in those entries that constitutes rule breaking during Covid restrictions.”

He denied “mingling with friends at Chequers” and said: “The whole thing is totally nonsensical . . . and bizarre.”

Asked who is trying to “stitch you up”, he added: “You may well ask.”

Mr Johnson quit as PM in July 2022 after he and his aides were fined by police for breaching lockdown over Partygate.

He is now being investigated by Parliament’s Privileges Committee of MPs over claims he lied to MPs over the affair.

If he is found guilty he could be suspended from the House of Commons or face a by-election.

But his allies warned this would “blow up” the Tory party.

Tory MP and close Boris ally Brendan Clarke-Smith said it is “nothing but a cynical attempt to discredit him”.

Mr Johnson’s spokesman said: “All these events were lawful. That is based on legal advice.”
