Alejandro Mayorkas, currently serving as Joe Biden's Secretary of Homeland Security, has a long and impressive career in law and politics. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1959, Mayorkas and his family fled the country and settled in Miami, Florida in 1960. They eventually made their home in Beverly Hills, California, where Mayorkas spent his formative years. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley and Loyola Law School, Mayorkas became an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California.
In 1998, Mayorkas was appointed as U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California by President Bill Clinton. He later served as the director of Citizenship and Immigration Services for the Obama Administration and stayed on until the end of Obama's term. In November 2020, Mayorkas was nominated by Joe Biden to be the Secretary of Homeland Security and was sworn into the position in February 2021, making him the first Latino immigrant to hold this title.
