SONY has announced a new way for your to upgrade the graphics on your PlayStation 5 – but there’s a catch.
You’ll need a brand new Sony TV to take full advantage of the new visual setting, according to the Japanese tech titan.
Called “Auto HDR Tone Mapping”, the feature was announced in a press release dished out by Sony last week.
It works by automatically ensuring that the maximum brightness and darkness of images in the game match the telly you’re watching on.
That means better shadowing and less blowout of brighter parts of the image.
The drawback is that it only works if you have a “BRAVIA XR” TV, which means the five highest-end models from Sony’s 2021 TV range.
Start at £1,249, Sony describes the range as its “perfect for PS5 TVs” as they’re geared to get the most out of the company’s sought-after console.
They’re made up of the BRAVIA XR TV models Z9J, A90J, A80J, X95J and X90J.
Sony said it will release Auto HDR Tone Mapping by the end of January 2022.
The feature will roll out as a software update to both PlayStation 5 consoles and BRAVIA XR TV models.
Sony released two consoles in November 2020. The full PS5 costs £449/$499, while a Digital Edition without a disc tray is priced at £359/$399.
They’re up against Microsoft’s new Xboxes, which also hit shelves in November.
The Xbox Series X costs £449/$499 while the Series S – which is less powerful and doesn’t come with a disc tray – is priced at £249/$299.
The PS5 launched with major exclusive games like Spider-Man Miles Morales and a revamped version of Dark Souls for players to enjoy.
Xbox gamers, on the other hand, have a new Halo title to look forward to later this year.
All four consoles have been sold out around the world, with stock seesawing in and out of availability over the past few weeks.
In other news, Trending In The News’s favourite alternative to a games console is the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.
Grab a VR headset and you’ll be able to play the legendary Beat Saber – like Guitar Hero, but with lightsabers.
And Dell’s Alienware R10 Ryzen Edition is a gaming PC powerhouse that crushes both the new consoles.
