ROBLOX has recently announced that adult content will be coming to the game.
The audience of Roblox is overwhelmingly young children, despite the 13+ age recommendation.
Parents are concerned with adult-themed content already on the platform.
Roblox has come under fire in the past for hosting adult content including arson simulators, games where you murder popular children’s characters, and bathroom simulators.
In particular these bathroom simulators are incredibly popular, where users peep on others removing their pants and using toilets.
As announced on Twitter, Roblox says: “Roblox is a platform where people of all ages can connect with friends and discover a wide range of content.
“As our platform ages-up, we’re allowing creators to make content for people 17 and older.”
Statistics show that 56% of users are under the recommended age of 13, and 67% of users are under 16.
Just 14% of users are 25+ showing how the game largely targets children.
It should be noted that this data is based on the age that users claim they are, so the average age is likely lower than this in reality.
In order to access the 17+ rated content, users will first need to be age verified.
This process has come under fire in the past, as children often faked parental permission in order to play.
While the system requires users to upload a copy of government approved ID, only an AI checks this information.
Because a human isn’t involved in this process, it would be easy for a child to upload and enter an older person’s ID and information.
Users must be over 17 in order to both create and play this content, but again this can be negated by using someone else’s ID.
Given the questionable content that is already offered on the platform, parents are concerned about the new content that will be added.
There are concerns over the inclusion of overly violent and pornographic content, given that it already hosts violent and sexual scenarios.
What these changes mean for the Roblox community we will have to wait to see.
