PS5 now warns you if you’re about to play WORSE PS4 versions of your favourite games

YOUR PlayStation 5 now warns you if you’re about to play the PS4 versions of your games.

An update issued to Sony’s next-gen consoles this week added the message, which pops up whenever you play cross-gen titles.

Some games, such as Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War, can run either the PS4 or PS5 version on the new machine.

Players had previously complained that the PS5 didn’t make clear whether they were playing PS4 or PS5 variants.

It meant some gamers were inadvertently playing second-rate versions of games with worse graphics and frame rates.

Following a recent software update, a pop-up now asks which generation you would like to play.

“You’re about to play the PS4 version of this game,” the message reads, according to a screen grab shared by Twitter user @Tidux.

“Do you want to switch to the PS5 version?”

It’s a useful addition. Last month, Eurogamer reported that Call of Duty fans were frequently playing the wrong version of the game by mistake.

Those who choose the Download All option after purchasing the game’s Ultimate Edition or Cross-Gen Bundle from the PlayStation Store get both the old-gen and next-gen versions.

The trouble is, the PS5 would automatically boot up the PS4 version of the game when gamers hit play.

That meant players weren’t getting the highest end graphics and performance provided by the PS5 version of the first-person shooter.

Hopefully, the issue has now been rectified by the new pop-up.

Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War launched last month across five consoles, including the PS4 and PS5.

Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War is one of this year’s biggest blockbusters for next-gen consoles

The blockbuster shooter is set during the Cold War – a period of major tension between the USA and Soviet Union.

It wasn’t an outright war in the conventional sense, with both nations instead supporting “proxy wars” – regional conflicts used to gain global influence.

And the fact that both nations controlled nuclear weaponry meant that neither side was willing to risk a war proper.

Last week game publisher Activision released the game’s first major multiplayer update.

In other news, Trending In The News’s favourite alternative to a games console is the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.

Grab a VR headset and you’ll be able to play the legendary Beat Saber – like Guitar Hero, but with lightsabers.

And Dell’s Alienware R10 Ryzen Edition is a gaming PC powerhouse that crushes both the new consoles.
