Pokémon's Indigo Disk: A Promising DLC That Falls Short on Grinding

Pokémon's Indigo Disk: A Promising DLC That Falls Short on Grinding

A Disappointing Experience for a Pokémon Fan

As a devoted Pokémon fan, I couldn't contain my excitement when I first saw the trailers for The Indigo Disk. The latest DLC promised the inclusion of all starters from every generation of Pokémon in the wild for the first time, along with the return of 26 legendaries from previous games. However, despite these exciting additions, my overall experience with The Indigo Disk left me feeling disappointed.

Grinding Takes the Spotlight

While the DLC offers the opportunity to catch strong and rare Pokémon, the amount of grinding required is a major drawback. In order to unlock more of the game's content, players must earn a currency called BP by completing repetitive and tedious quests inside Blueberry Academy. These quests range from simple tasks like taking pictures or picking up items, to more time-consuming challenges like hatching eggs or finding specific blocks on the map.

Battle Challenges and Elite 4 Gauntlet

The Indigo Disk focuses on battling, with all battles in the DLC being double battles and teams specifically designed for this format. This adds a new level of difficulty to the game, requiring players to rethink their standard teams. The Elite 4 in the DLC also presents a brand new gauntlet of difficult trainers to take down, each with their own challenging sets.

A Plethora of New Pokémon and Extra Content

Despite its shortcomings, The Indigo Disk does offer a plethora of new Pokémon, including beloved regional forms that fans thought they would never see again. Additionally, the DLC provides plenty of extra content to explore, making the initial experience enjoyable for the first few hours of gameplay.

The Frustration of Unlocking Post-Game Content

Where The Indigo Disk truly falls short is in the unlocking of post-game content. Players need a significant amount of BP to unlock starters, complete their Pokédex, and fulfill Perrin's quest. Unfortunately, most BP quests only reward players with 20 BP, making it a lengthy and monotonous process to accumulate the necessary amount. Even joining a Union Circle with another player to earn BP more quickly doesn't alleviate the repetitive nature of the tasks.

An Unfulfilled Potential

The core concept of The Indigo Disk is undeniably appealing, but the excessive grinding required to fully enjoy the DLC ultimately diminishes its potential. While the DLC offers challenging battles, a plethora of new Pokémon, and additional content, the repetitive and time-consuming nature of the BP quests leaves much to be desired.
