The Price Debate: PS5 Pro vs. Gaming PC
PLAYSTATION unveiled the PS5 Pro, sparking discussions among fans about its improvements and, most notably, its price tag. Priced at £700/$700 without the disc drive or stand, it stands as the most expensive console on the market, albeit the most powerful. Gamers compared this cost to that of a high-end gaming PC, noting that many PlayStation exclusives eventually make their way to platforms like Steam.
Building a Comparable PC
In light of the advantages a powerful PC offers over a console, we set out to determine if we could construct a PC that matches the performance of the PS5 Pro at a similar price point. Focusing on components equal to or more powerful than the PS5 Pro, we aimed to replicate its graphical fidelity, resolution, and framerate.
The Components
After our experiment, we managed to build a high-end PC for approximately $850 / £650 without hunting for deals. Here are the components we selected:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
- CPU Cooler: Wraith Stealth Cooler
- Motherboard: MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX
- GPU: ASRock Gigabyte WINDFORCE OC GeForce RTX 4070 Super
- RAM: G.Skill Aegis 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz
- Storage: Western Digital Black SN770 2 TB
- PSU: Corsair CX (2023) 750 W 80+ Bronze ATX Power Supply
- Case: Be quiet! Pure Base 500 ATX Mid Tower Case
Consider the Long-Term Value
While there may be additional costs associated with a gaming PC, such as the operating system, mouse, and keyboard, the flexibility and versatility it offers can provide better value in the long run. With the ability to customize settings and access various storefronts for discounts and free games, PC gaming can lead to significant savings over time.
Final Verdict
Ultimately, it may be challenging to build a gaming PC at the exact price point of a PS5 Pro, but the potential for long-term savings and the added benefits of high-performance gaming, editing capabilities, and more make it a compelling option for many gamers.
