Gaming outlets in the US and UK are going crazy over a GTA 6 leak that’s nothing but one journalist’s speculation on the game.
French journalist Chris Klippel of R* Mag has a solid track record with leaks.
So when a couple of his recent videos on his YouTube channel about Grand Theft Auto 6 mentioned a missed 2020 release date, and setting for the game, the media pounced on it.
Unfortunately, what Klippel posted wasn’t a leak at all and simply his speculation on the game and it’s development.
NeoGAF appears to be the source of the snafu, and reels off ‘facts’ that Klippel had dropped about the title including:
- GTA 6 being scrapped and development starting over
- GTA 6 missing its slated 2020 announcement date
- GTA 6 taking place in two time periods
The thread states that – according to Klippel – after Dan Houser’s departure, GTA 6 had been “restarted”, although the plot had already been changes before he actually left.
Rockstar missed the 2020 announcement date because the “story and other game elements” had been changes “too many times since 2019.”
It also says that Klippel “confirms” that GTA 6 will take place in two time periods, and that he’s seen the map and “other elements” but as everything is in flux, it’s pointless to share anything.
Once the story gained traction, Klippel took to Twitter to set everyone straight.
“I don’t understand why 5/6 weeks after the release of my video there is such a big buzz from the US community. Strangely enough, no problem in France,” he tweeted.
He goes on to say that the only part of the video based on info from his sources is the Red Dead Redemption remaster project, which was covered by mainstream media in the summer.
“That’s it. Everything else is just an interpretation of MY OPINION that I give in my videos to answer subscribers. Nothing else! Sorry for the big media validating info from forums without validating it!”
The problem seems to have stemmed from eager fans using Google Translate and spiralled from there.
Fellow leaker Tom Henderson stepped in to set the record straight on Klippel’s behalf too.
“The new rumors floating around on GTA 6 and Red Dead Remastered is [Chris] giving his opinions/thoughts/speculation.
“It is not new or leaked information on either title.”
