A PARTNERSHIP has reportedly been agreed for a third-party studio to develop a MMO set in the world of Horizon.
The Horizon series has two games so far, with a third coming exclusively to PS VR2 early next year.
Forbidden West released this year.
Horizon Zero Dawn was released in 2017, while the sequel Horizon Forbidden West was released this year.
Both came out to critical acclaim, and the upcoming Call of the Mountain will be the big release launch for the upcoming headset.
An updated version of the original game is also reportedly being developed for PlayStation 5.
Previously, developer Guerrilla Games announced that a multiplayer Horizon game is in the works for both PS5 and PC.
However, the newly rumoured MMO is apparently separate from the Guerrilla developed multiplayer game.
According to Korean news site MTN, and as found by Eurogamer, a tentative agreement has been made to develop a Horizon MMO.
Korean studio NCsoft, best known for MMOs such as Guild Wars, will apparently be heading development.
A source told MTN that publisher Sony has: “tentatively agreed to pursue a business partnership in which NC will create new games using Sony’s promising game IP.”
This news follows previous reports that NTsoft is “producing a new game of the Horizon IP created by Guerrilla Games.”
Like Guerrilla Games’ own multiplayer Horizon title, it appears that the potential MMO is still in very early stages of development.
The original studio is apparently currently focused on the PS5 port, as well as the upcoming VR game.
Call of the Mountain will feature a new protagonist from the main series, where players take on the role of Aloy.
In the upcoming game, players will instead take on the role of former Shadow Carja Warrior Ryas.
The multiplayer game and MMO will likely feature multiple playable characters, which is the standard for the genre.
Another possibility is that players will be able to create their own unique character.
