Doom games in order: By release date and timeline

DOOM is a video game released first in 1993 which sees players act as a space marine under the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) which aims at killing demons and zombies and protect Earth from going into an apocalypse.

These are the games in order.

Doom

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch

The first-ever version of this game was released way back in 1993 on December 10.

It presented a world of science and horror in which the first-person shooter, who is an unnamed space marine, must kill zombies and demons on Mars and protect Earth from ever entering an apocalypse.

The game could also be played in multiplayer – cooperative mode – in which two to four players team up to defend Earth together.

On the other hand, the players can also play against each other in deathmatch mode.

Doom II: Hell on Earth

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch

The sequel to the first edition was released on September 30, 1994.

In this one, Earth is now invaded and the leaders of the biggest cities in the world plan on using spacecraft to evacuate any survivors.

The starport is the only access point to the spacecrafts but it has been invaded by demons who have killed all the human soldiers.

It is now down to the space marine to save the civilians and get them to safety in the spacecraft and off Earth.

Doom 3

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

Doom 3 was released on August 3, 2004.

The game was announced in 2000, six years after the release of Doom 2, and lead programmer John Carmack said that the game will be developed using next generation technology.

The game introduced four difficulty levels: Recruit, Marine, Veteran and Nightmare.

The main difference in the difficulty is how much damage can be made to the player.

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil

Platforms: PC, Xbox

This game was released on April 3, 2005.

Only one survivor came out alive from an attack by the forces of Hell which destroyed the UAC Mars Research Base and killed all work personnel.

The attack happened after an experiment with teleportation technology went wrong.

This game featured new monsters and weapons – such as a double-barreled shotgun, a grabber gun and The Artifact – which were not in
Doom 3.

Doom 3: BFG Edition

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch

This is a remastered version of Doom 3 which was released on October 16, 2012.

The teleportation experiments continue in this one and now there is only one survivor left from the team found in the Resurrection of Evil.

The marine’s mission is now to destroy an experimental teleportation array which was stolen by the demons and is being held in hell.

If not, they might use it to send a whole army of demons to Earth.

Doom

The reboot of the game came out on May 13, 2016, and during its development it was known as Doom 4.

It’s now 2148, and the Doom Slayer – an ancient warrior has been awakened after the UAX scientist Dr Olivia Pierce allowed the forces of hell to invade.

Doomguy now has to try and save Mars with his agility, high jumps, weapons and skill.

Doom Eternal

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch

The sequel to the 2016 Doom was released on March 20, 2020.

It has a similar single-player mode with different weapons while the multiplayer mode is called Battlemode in which players face each other in a 2v1.

The player on their own are the Slayer while his opponents are demons.

Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Part One

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch

This is the first part that goes on from the original Doom Eternal and it was released on October 20, 2020.

Khan Maykr and Urdak have now died and this led for demons to have power to dominate more dimensions and start invading Earth again.

In order to prevent this from happening, the Slayer starts a search for Seraphim along with Samuel Hayden and some AUC scientists.

Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Part Two

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch

Part Two was finally released on March 18, 2021.

In this game, the Dark Lord is summoned and the Doom Slayer is attempting to kill him.

But blood cannot be shed in the Luminarium and so they will have one final confrontation in hell’s capital city, Immora.
