Deluxe Editions: Are They Worth the Extra Cost?

Gamers Upset as Deluxe Editions Double the Price of Games

The cost of video games and consoles continues to rise, making an already expensive hobby even pricier. As a result, gamers are being forced to be more selective about the games they purchase. However, a concerning trend in the gaming industry is making those choices even more difficult.

Locking Content Behind Additional Purchases

Developers are increasingly locking off more content behind additional purchases, often at significant price points. One prime example of this is the rise of Deluxe Editions, which allow players to access the game before its official release date. However, to do so, they must pay an extra £20/$20 on top of the already steep £70/$70 price tag.

Playing Early: Is It Worth the Extra Cost?

While some players consider Deluxe Editions an essential top-up, others question whether the early access is worth the additional expense. The appeal of playing a game right when it's released is undeniable, as it allows players to avoid spoilers on social media. However, it seems absurd that a game would not be available to those who purchase it on its release day.

Content Behind a Paywall

Release dates are not the only thing being put behind a paywall. Developers are now also locking off additional in-game content. For example, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, a highly-rated game, offers extra classes and a New Game+ mode for an additional cost. Sonic Origins takes this trend to the extreme, with even the main menu and cutscenes locked behind Deluxe Editions.

A Disturbing Trend

As long as gamers continue to purchase these more expensive premium editions, developers will continue to release games with content that should be included as standard. This trend is upsetting to many, and some fear that we are already on the verge of £100/$100 games becoming the norm.
