28% of Staff Let Go as Artificial Intelligence Gains Popularity

Stack Overflow, the developer and programmer platform, is reducing its workforce by approximately 28% as AI chatbots gain traction in the tech industry. The company's CEO, Prashanth Chandrasekar, announced the decision on Oct. 16, attributing it to macroeconomic pressures affecting the entire sector. Chandrasekar emphasized that the company remains on track for profitability and continued product innovation. Stack Overflow, a 15-year-old tech-focused Q&A forum, had doubled its headcount in 2022 to 540, making the recent layoffs account for around 150 employees.

AI Impact on Web Traffic

In August, Stack Overflow reported a slight decline in web traffic compared to the previous year, with an average decrease of 5%. The company acknowledged that the release of GPT-4 in March likely contributed to an above-average traffic decrease of around 14% in April. Stack Overflow also noted that generative AI is expected to cause fluctuations in traditional traffic and engagement in the coming months.

Rise of AI Chatbots

Technology outlets such as Ars Technica have attributed the rise of AI chatbots to the decline in traffic and usage of traditional social knowledge-sharing platforms, including forums. Chatbots offer more specific help and can correct code, provide optimization suggestions, and explain the functionality of each line of code. New York University Professor Panos Ipeirotis also supported this view, suggesting that AI chatbots provide personalized solutions.

Stack Overflow's Solution: Overflow AI

Despite the challenges posed by AI chatbots, Stack Overflow is developing its own answer to OpenAI's ChatGPT. Called "Overflow AI," the platform aims to leverage the community's knowledge to power AI that provides developers with personalized and trustworthy solutions. Chandrasekar emphasized the company's commitment to introducing new features and enhancing the developer experience.

Industry-Wide Impact

Stack Overflow's decision to reduce its workforce is not an isolated incident. Coinhouse, a French crypto exchange, has also laid off 15% of its employees, citing reduced enthusiasm for Web3 and a fragile global economic environment. Similarly, a French hardware wallet provider recently announced a 12% staff reduction.

Cointelegraph reached out to Stack Overflow for comment, but the company referred back to its Oct. 16 announcement.
