Nigeria is inviting scientists of Nigerian heritage and renowned AI experts to collaborate on the formulation of its National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy. The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has initiated the development of the strategy, which aims to address the country's critical national challenges through technological solutions. By assembling a team of leading AI researchers with Nigerian roots, the Nigerian government hopes to tap into their expertise and leverage AI's potential for societal progress and economic expansion.

The potential of AI

An estimated $15.7 trillion could be contributed to the global economy by 2030 through the deployment of artificial intelligence, according to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The study highlights that enhanced productivity could account for approximately $3 trillion, while the development of novel goods and services could contribute up to $9.1 trillion. Recognizing these possibilities, the Nigerian government is keen to harness the power of AI to drive economic growth and address its national challenges.

Identifying AI experts

In order to identify accomplished AI researchers with Nigerian roots, the Nigerian government employed a sophisticated method. Using global AI publication data and advanced machine learning models, the government developed a research index similar to the "h-index," pinpointing influential AI researchers of Nigerian heritage. The aim is to collaborate with these experts and benefit from their knowledge and insights.

Public involvement

The Nigerian government acknowledges the potential for errors and seeks public involvement in the development of its National AI Strategy. By tapping into collective knowledge and insights, the government aims to create a comprehensive plan that addresses the needs and challenges of the Nigerian population.

Expanding AI communities

Kashifu Inuwa, the director-general of NITDA, has announced plans to establish communities of AI developers nationwide. The initiative will begin in three states in 2023 and gradually expand to include additional states and all local government areas. By nurturing AI talent locally, Nigeria aims to become a hub for innovative technological advancements and shape its own technological future.
