Language Barrier and Lack of Awareness
A group of blockchain experts in Nigeria gathered at the Stakeholders in Blockchain Technology Association of Nigeria (SIBAN)’s Digital Assets Summit 2023 to discuss the challenges faced in blockchain education in the country. Despite Nigeria's relatively high level of blockchain and crypto awareness, there are still issues related to public education in the field.
One of the major challenges highlighted by Bello Usman Abdullahi, the COO of Bitkova Academy, a blockchain education platform, is the language barrier. With over 500 languages spoken in Nigeria, explaining the complexity of blockchain technology and its jargon becomes difficult. However, local blockchain hubs have started addressing this issue by educating individuals in local Nigerian languages.
Understanding Blockchain's Purpose
Abdullahi emphasized the importance of helping individuals new to blockchain and Web3 understand the original intention behind its creation by Satoshi Nakamoto. This is crucial in countering the fear and negativity that has been created by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the government. In February 2021, the CBN severed connections between local banks and cryptocurrency exchange firms, causing a decline in blockchain awareness and associating blockchain and crypto with negative perceptions.
Nigeria's Crypto Interest
Nigeria, once the top country in the world in terms of search interest for Bitcoin (BTC), has now slipped to the second position, according to Google Trends data. Despite this, efforts are being made to bridge the gap in blockchain education and improve awareness in the country.
