Race for Market Supremacy
A coalition of technology leaders, led by IBM and Meta, has formed the AI Alliance to foster transparent innovation and responsible development in artificial intelligence (AI). Rather than competing, these companies aim to collaborate and work together towards their shared objectives.
Commitment to Safety and Collaboration
IBM and Meta outlined the AI Alliance's objectives in a joint statement, highlighting their commitment to safety, collaboration, diversity, economic opportunity, and universal benefits. The alliance includes over 50 tech companies, with a collective annual research and development investment exceeding $80 billion.
Governing Board and Technical Oversight Committee
The AI Alliance will establish a governing board and technical oversight committee to advance AI projects, set standards, and develop guidelines. The alliance also aims to collaborate with governments, nonprofits, and other organizations operating in the AI sector.
Engaging the Academic Community
The AI Alliance includes several educational and research institutions, such as Cern, NASA, Cornell University, and Yale University. By involving the academic community, the alliance seeks to share tools and knowledge that can drive progress in AI development.
Missing Players
Notably absent from the AI Alliance are prominent AI developers like Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. These companies have formed their own initiative, The Frontier Forum, dedicated to responsible AI.
Government Engagement
Earlier this year, the Biden Administration held discussions with major AI developers to commit to responsible AI development. Signatories included OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, and more. Additional companies, such as NVIDIA, IBM, and Salesforce, have since joined the pledge.
