Introduction

Ethereum, the blockchain platform, has recently launched a new testnet called "Holešky." This testnet will be used for staking, infrastructure, and protocol development, while the Sepolia network will remain the dominant network for application development.

1.6 Billion HETH Allocated for Validators

On the day of the Holešky testnet's launch, a total of 1.6 billion Holesky testnet Ether (HETH) will be allocated to validators. This large initial supply is ten times the amount of ETH present on the mainnet and aims to bootstrap the network into operation. Ethereum developer Tim Beiko stated that this amount was deemed appropriate as "devnets [are] regularly using 10B supply."

Holešky to Address Ethereum's Testing Needs

The previous Goerli testnet, launched in 2018, has been used for testing new staking, infrastructure, and protocol developments. However, developers began to complain about Goerli's low supply of ETH for adequate testing. Holešky, with its substantial initial supply of ETH, is expected to help alleviate this issue.

Transition from Goerli to Sepolia

Since the launch of Sepolia in 2021, the Ethereum team has been urging application developers to move from Goerli to Sepolia. The plan is to deprecate Goerli in January 2024, with the network being maintained for an additional year before eventually being shut down entirely, according to the documentation.

Holešky's Importance for Ethereum Developers

Holešky holds significant importance for Ethereum developers, considering their ambitious roadmap ahead. They aim to implement features like proto-danksharding, danksharding, and Verkle trees, which are expected to reduce fees and make running a node more cost-effective. Before these features are implemented on the mainnet, they will go through rigorous trials on the Holešky testnet.
