End of an era

Ethereum developers are saying goodbye to two beloved toolkits, Truffle and Ganache, as Consensys, the blockchain software company, announced a shift in focus. The announcement, made on September 22, revealed that Consensys will be redirecting its efforts toward Metamask Snaps and SDK. Truffle and Ganache were once essential for smart contracts on the Ethereum network.

A fond farewell

The news sparked nostalgia among Ethereum developers, with Georgios Konstantopoulos, chief technology officer and partner at Paradigm, describing it as the "end of an era." Many developers expressed their gratitude for the tools, sharing that they had written their first-ever smart contracts using Truffle and Ganache. The announcement resonated with the community, highlighting the significant role these toolkits played in the early days of Ethereum.

Transitioning tech stacks

Consensys acknowledged the importance of a smooth transition between toolkits and announced a partnership with HardHat to facilitate developers' shift from Truffle and Ganache. This collaboration aims to ensure a seamless process for developers as they continue to write and deploy new software on the Ethereum network. Consensys is investing in new tools and APIs to empower developers and accelerate the development of their offerings.

Truffle and Ganache legacy

The Truffle Suite, launched in 2015, was acquired by Consensys in 2020 and was relied upon by 1.3 million developers worldwide at the time of acquisition. Following the winding down of the Truffle Suite over the next 90 days, the Truffle and Ganache codebases will remain available as public archives. This decision ensures the continued accessibility of these beloved tools for future reference and research.

Metamask Snaps

As Consensys transitions its focus, Metamask Snaps will take center stage. Snaps are new decentralized applications developed by third parties that expand the functionality of the Metamask wallet. Consensys' head of strategy, Simon Morris, likened the upcoming MetaMask Snaps to Apple's App Store, bringing a new wave of innovation and convenience to Ethereum developers.
