The Game

Illuvium, a blockchain-based game developed by Illuvium Labs, is making its way to the Epic Games Store, home to popular titles like Fortnite. The game will be available on the store starting from Nov. 28, following months of preparation to meet Epic's standards.

Appealing to a Wider Audience

Illuvium was developed using Unreal Engine 5 on the Immutable X network. The game will feature three different genres: Overworld, an open world exploration game; Arena, an autobattler strategy game; and Zero, a mobile and desktop city-builder. The aim is to attract a wider audience by offering different game modes.

Removing Barriers to Entry

To onboard more users, Illuvium has adapted its approach to address the challenges faced by blockchain games featuring nonfungible token (NFT) elements. The game is free to play and does not require users to have a wallet, eliminating the need for non-Web3 native gamers to invest money upfront.

Mainstream Hesitance

Mainstream game publishers have been hesitant to list games that incorporate Web3 infrastructure. Concerns include potential implications for existing business models and regulatory uncertainties surrounding blockchain technology and NFTs.

A Major Milestone

The listing of Illuvium on the Epic Games Store is seen as a significant milestone for the wider blockchain gaming industry. It signals the increasing recognition and acceptance of web3 gaming as a major player in the crypto space.

The Future of Blockchain Games

Web3 gaming investors have become more cautious in backing early-stage studios building blockchain games. This is due to the effects of a lengthy cryptocurrency bear market, which has necessitated greater due diligence from industry venture capitalists.
