The creator and chief coder of Bitcoin Ordinals, Casey Rodarmor, has put forth a proposal to alter the numbering system of the protocol in order to simplify the project's codebase.

Current numbering system

Since the inception of the Ordinals protocol, each nonfungible token (NFT) created using Ordinals has been assigned a unique inscription number. These numbers function like serial numbers and have played a vital role in the digital art created within the protocol.

"I guess the cat is out of the bag! In short, I think that the effort to keep inscription numbers stable hasn't been worth it, and has led to ugly code and stalled development, since new changes need to be extremely and often awkardly careful not to change the numbers of old..."

Permanently unstable numbers

Rodarmor, however, believes that maintaining stable inscription numbers has resulted in "ugly code and stalled development." With this in mind, the chief coder of the protocol has proposed the concept of making inscription numbers "permanently unstable," meaning the unique numbering system within the Bitcoin network will be deprioritized.

According to Rodarmor, this change will simplify the codebase of the protocol and make future protocol modifications more straightforward. It should be noted that inscription numbers will still change, but not completely disappear. The coder has specified that new inscription numbers will be similar to the old ones but may differ by around 1%.

Community response

While the proposed change has garnered support from many, others have raised concerns about the impact on users who have paid significant amounts to acquire specific numbers. In response, a community member has noted that individuals who attach importance to the numbering of inscriptions can still sort the collectibles based on their timestamps.

About Bitcoin Ordinals

Bitcoin Ordinals are artifacts that enable inscriptions on a Satoshi, which is the smallest unit of Bitcoin (BTC). The protocol was launched in January 2023 and has witnessed thousands of inscriptions minted on the BTC network. Since its introduction, Ordinals has consistently generated activity on the Bitcoin network, with the NFT-like protocol accounting for 84.9% of all activity on August 21.
