Tanzanian Bitcoin Educator Raises Awareness
A Bitcoin educator based in Tanzania recently climbed Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, to raise awareness about digital currency and promote a new Bitcoin education academy in the country. The educator, known as Kweks, crowdfunded over $1,700 in Bitcoin to cover the costs of the hike, which also served as an announcement for the Proof of Work Academy (POWA).
Funding the Ascent with Bitcoin Donations
Kweks funded the climb by accepting Bitcoin Lightning Network donations from around the world. The funds were received through crowdfunding platforms Geyser Fund and Zapraising, and were converted into Satoshis, the smallest unit of Bitcoin. Kweks carried and waved a giant Nostr flag during the ascent to symbolize his support for decentralized protocols.
Educating the Local Community
Through the climb, Kweks aimed to demonstrate the potential of Bitcoin and introduce more people to the digital currency. He received questions and comments from Tanzanians about Bitcoin and faced the challenge of explaining the concept in a country where there is more reliance on bartering and a lack of understanding about hyperinflation.
Bitcoin Adoption Challenges in Tanzania
While there is some understanding of Bitcoin in Tanzania, one of the key challenges is the lack of offramps into local currency. Major cryptocurrency exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken do not operate in Tanzania, making it difficult to convert Bitcoin into Tanzanian Shillings. Kweks believes that using relatable terms and discussing the impact of inflation on everyday life can help educate Tanzanians about the potential benefits of Bitcoin.
Continuing Bitcoin Education Efforts in Tanzania
Kweks remains committed to promoting Bitcoin education in Tanzania and continues to share educational resources on digital currency platforms. The Proof of Work Academy offers free classes to Tanzanians near Mount Kilimanjaro, helping to empower individuals with knowledge about Bitcoin and its potential impact on the economy.
