What time is Priti Patel’s announcement?

Priti Patel’s announcement will begin at 5pm on January 12, 2021.

It will be the first No10 press briefing the Home Secretary has given since May 2020.

What is Priti Patel expected to say?

The Home Secretary will press the Government’s message that the nation must stick by the rules to get Covid cases down again, after days of the numbers soaring.

Her message is likely to echo that of Metropolitan Police Chief Cressida Dick, who said on January 12 that police will be quicker to fine people for breaking lockdown laws.

Ms Dick also revealed that the Met had dished out 300 fines in the last 24 hours alone as the message to stay at home and not mix with those outside your support bubble was ramped up.

It comes as people continue to hold illegal parties and gatherings during the strict lockdown, with cops urging people to stick to the rules.

Writing in The Times, Dame Cressida said: “It is preposterous to me that anyone could be unaware of our duty to do all we can to stop the spread of the virus.”

She added: “We have been clear that those who breach Covid-19 legislation are increasingly likely to face fines.”

On January 11, Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that lockdown rules may be tightened again to stop Covid spreading even further.
