POUNDLAND is closing 44 shops temporarily from this Sunday due to the third coronavirus lockdown.

The closures come after the retailer reported an 80% drop in customers visiting some stores.

Poundland is ‘hibernating’ 44 of its stores

The rest of Poundland’s 800 stores in the UK will remain open for business, as the retailer has been classed as an “essential” business.

Poundland hasn’t said when it expects to reopen these sites.

But in the majority of locations where the budget retailer is closing stores, it says there is another branch nearby that will remain open.

Poundland will place colleagues in temporarily closed stores on furlough “where appropriate”.

In the first 2020 lockdown, the retailer hibernated around 120 shops in March and was able to start reopening them from the end of May.

Poundland has been allowed to stay open throughout the coronavirus pandemic as it sells food, medicine and other important goods.

But customers are being reminded to only visit stores for essential products.

Retailers who’ve been deemed “non-essential” – including ones that sell clothing, toys and homeware – have been ordered to shut during the third lockdown.

Austin Cooke, Poundland’s retail director said: “We learned valuable lessons during the lockdown in March about how buying patterns change as people stick to government advice to stay at home.

“Putting a small number of stores into hibernation helps protect them for the long term and focus our attention on the majority of stores that remain open to serve their neighbourhoods.

“We hope this lockdown is short and we can re-open our hibernating stores as quickly as possible and we remain grateful for the vital support schemes available to us that help protect jobs.”
