The Chancellor was there when Boris Johnson was presented with a birthday cake by No 10 officials and wife Carrie in June 2020.

Police have reportedly been handed photos showing Mr Sunak clutching a soft drink, with the Prime Minister holding a beer, in the Cabinet Room.

When grilled earlier this month, the Chancellor said: “I am in the Cabinet Room for a Covid meeting much like the other 100, 200, God knows how many other Covid meetings. You’re asking me about something that happened almost two years ago. I went to that Cabinet Room, as I did many other times, for Covid meetings.

“And it’s right that we allow this police investigation.”

The PM has already sent the answers back on his questionnaire, which states he is under caution. He is now awaiting further questions or a possible fine.

It is believed to be the first time a PM, and now the Chancellor, have been subject to such a level of questioning by police.

Operation Hillman is looking into eight gatherings at the height of the pandemic.

Individuals are asked around a dozen questions about whether they took part in a specific gathering, why they were there, and if they interacted with anyone else.

Cabinet Office enforcer Sue Gray is expected to publish a full dossier on the gatherings after police complete their probe.
