Brits ‘should order that turkey as a traditional Christmas will definitely be on this year’

FAMILIES should “order that turkey” as a traditional Christmas will definitely be on this year, scientists and ministers said yesterday.

The UK will escape the deadly Covid wave battering Europe thanks to the bumper jabs roll-out and previous high infection rates, medics predicted.

Protests have erupted in The Netherlands, Austria, Croatia and Italy over new restrictions.

But Prof Sir John Bell, of Oxford University, said: “The pattern of our disease doesn’t match the pattern of Europe.

“It may well be the delay in lockdown, the pretty extensive level of disease in the UK, has given us longer term protection.

“My advice is order that turkey because it’ll all be fine.”

Health Secretary Sajid Javid says he is “firmly” sticking to Plan A and there is no intention to bring back restrictions.

He said he was planning a big family Christmas this year, adding: “We have ordered a turkey.”

But he warned Brits not to be “complacent” and to get their boosters to protect the holiday.

And Oxford vaccine chief Prof Sir Andrew Pollard said: “It’s unlikely we’re going to see a very sharp rise in the next few months.”

He added without the jabs, there could have been 300,000 deaths by now.

The current toll is 143,927.
