Senior Tories urged him to overhaul his inner circle and become the “wartime leader” Britain needs to beat Covid.

One top Tory branded No 10 a “sh**show” while another backbencher said he will hand in his letter of no confidence in the PM this week “to put him on notice”.

Tobias Ellwood, chairman of the Commons Defence Select Committee, told Times Radio: “We need an almost wartime leader.

“We need a strong No 10, and the machinery of No 10 around Boris Johnson needs to be improved.”

Key ally Lord Frost quit the Cabinet, attacking the “direction of travel” No 10 is taking.

He urged the PM to create a “lightly regulated, low-tax” economy.

And he warned against “coercive” Covid measures — like vaccine passports and compulsory mask wearing.

After he quit, Tory MPs on the Clean Brexit WhatsApp group hailed him as a hero.

But Brexit hardman Steve Baker then kicked Cabinet minister Nadine Dorries out of the chat after she wrote the true hero of Brexit is the PM.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss are hoping to seize the Tory crown if Mr Johnson falls.

Ms Truss will now take on Lord Frost’s role, leading on post-Brexit talks with the EU — in a boost to her credentials.
