What did Boris Johnson say in his announcement on Monday, February 21?

The PM announced the plans to repeal all pandemic regulations that restrict public freedoms in England as part of his living with Covid plan.

Ministers said future variants are expected to be similar to Omicron in terms of being milder than early mutations.

Boris Johnson updated parliament on the plans before holding a news conference alongside Professor Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance.

What will Boris Johnson announce?

New positive cases of Covid-19 will no longer have to isolate for five days from the end of the week.

Self-isolation for those who test positive will be scrapped by the end of the week as the government sets out its plan for “living with Covid”.

Free testing will also be wound down until the end of April, and close contacts of those who contract Covid will not be expected to take regular tests.

Mr Johnson said earlier this week: “Today will mark a moment of pride after one of the most difficult periods in our country’s history as we begin to learn to live with Covid.

“It would not be possible without the efforts of so many – the NHS who delivered the life-saving vaccine rollout at phenomenal speed, our world-leading scientists and experts, and the general public for their commitment to protecting themselves and their loved ones.”

Downing Street said pharmaceutical interventions will “continue to be our first line of defence”, with the vaccine programme remaining “open to anyone who has not yet come forward”.

But No 10 appeared to keep the door open for state-funded infection sampling remaining in place.

Officials said the plan will maintain “resilience against future variants with ongoing surveillance capabilities”.
