A BILLION doses of coronavirus vaccines will be distributed to the developing world this year to help ensure a “global solution” to the pandemic.
The UK has helped raise an £800 million cash pot with allies to help 92 countries stop Covid and prevent future waves.
Ministers have guaranteed a total of £548 million in UK aid cash to ensure the jabs are used to help countries recover from the virus.
The announcement coincides with a three-day virtual visit to London by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Mr Raab said: “It is fitting that, on the 75th anniversary of the UN, the UK has led with our allies to make one billion doses of coronavirus vaccine available to vulnerable countries.
“We’ll only be safe from this virus, when we’re all safe – which is why we’re focused on a global solution to a global problem.”
Cash has been raised by countries including Canada and Germany to reach the landmark target.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said during a time of global turmoil, it was a chance to “renew our cause of overcoming global challenges together”.
