WHEN we finally get to travel again, we will want to make the most of every minute of each trip.
The experts at easyJet Traveller — the low-cost airline’s inflight magazine — have come up with their best travel experiences in Europe to enjoy once the borders open up.
Post-pandemic, the magazine went digital at traveller.easyjet.com as paper products were removed from easyJet aircraft — but they will return later in 2021.
Editor-in-chief Jonny Ensall said: “EasyJet Traveller’s best-of is all about celebrating the travel experiences that matter; things that are unusual, delicious, funny, moving and, most importantly, real.
“And the list for 2021 is especially inspiring.”
BEST ANIMAL THERAPY
MOVE over, goat yoga. Cow cuddling is the latest way to relieve stress and enhance wellness.
Get into a good mood at the Kastanje Hoeve dairy farm in the tiny village of Beets, some 40 minutes from Amsterdam.
Farmers Els and Gerard Milatz have been running sessions for nearly 30 years.
They also run a B&B so you can sleep over after your udderly relaxing session.
Stay the night and join the family farming or simply relax and use it as a base for exploring the surrounding area. Find out more at kastanje-hoeve.nl.
BEST GARMENT-FREE GETAWAY
EMBRACE your nakedness on a clothes-free retreat in Italy.
Naked, The Retreat is no haven for hedonists. This is serious stuff, including ten days of yoga, dance, meditation and bodywork, all in the buff.
The aim is to promote inner freedom and while the nakedness might be a leap for many, the stunning surroundings of the Tuscan countryside in summer will ensure you are not too chilly while you chill. See nakedtheretreat.com.
BEST ROOM WITH A VIEW
THE ultimate room with a view involves a quite bonkers solution — remove all the walls and ceiling.
The Zero Real Estate started in one stunning location in the Safien valley in the Swiss Alps, but in 2020 another six opened in locations dotted around eastern Switzerland and Lichtenstein.
The rooms consist of nothing more than a seriously comfy double bed, complete with night stands and lights, all set on a wooden platform.
You also get your own private butler who will look after you and bring you breakfast in bed each morning.
New locations include Lake Walen, the Glarus Alps, the St Gallen Rhine Valley and Appenzell Hills. See zerorealestate.ch.
BEST DRY SKI SLOPE
THE astonishing CopenHill in Copenhagen takes the idea of a green run to its absolute limit, with a dry ski slope winding its way down the roof of this architectural wonder.
The building itself is an eco-marvel waste-to-energy power plant and the addition of a new dry ski slope means you can swish down the rooftop slope while admiring sweeping views of Copenhagen.
There is an apre-ski bar, as well as hiking and jogging trails, and you can even scale the side of the building on the world’s tallest climbing wall. See copenhill.dk.
BEST BRIDGE
STANDING on this new bridge gives you an eye-popping view of the incredible Voringsfossen waterfall – one of the most-visited tourist attractions in Norway and probably the best-known cascade in the country.
Part of an ongoing development of the area that includes viewing platforms and paths, the bridge between Oslo and Bergen was more than ten years in the making but is definitely worth the wait.
BEST UNDERWATER MUSEUM
YOU need to be able to scuba dive but the rewards are worth it.
Just off the coast of the Greek island of Alonissos, hidden 24 metres below sea level lies Peristera, a 2,000-year-old merchant vessel.
In August last year it opened to the public, having previously only been accessible to achaeologists.
Diving with an authorised guide, you can explore the wreckage which includes 4,000 amphorae, cups, plates and other tableware. See alonissos.gr.
BEST CYCLING TRAIL
CYCLE through the treetops at this astonishing new trail at the Pijnven nature reserve in Belgium.
Cycling through The Trees is a 700-metre path that lets you pedal your way through the canopy, ten metres above ground.
It was designed to let cyclists engage with nature while blending in with it as much as possible.
Nearby, in the forest of Bosland, is Cycling Through Water in Bokrijk, where you can cycle 200 metres through the middle of a sparkling lake with the water almost at head-height around you. See visitlimburg.be.
BEST WILD SWIMMING SCHOOL
THE latest fitness craze has seen thousands take to natural lakes, rivers and seas in a bid to combine exercise with adrenaline-fuelled adventure.
If you fancy learning the ropes, who better than a man who has swum some of the world’s greatest rivers?
Martin Strel has done the Yangtze, Parana, Mississippi, Danube and Amazon.
Now he leads guided swims across the globe, but our pick is the four-day Slovenian Lakes & Rivers trip exploring his homeland.
Strel Swimming Adventures is based in Bohinj, an hour’s drive from the capital, Ljubljana. See strel-swimming.com
