Val Kilmer's Battle with Throat Cancer: Signs to Watch For

VAL Kilmer, known for his roles in movies like Top Gun and Batman Forever, has passed away at the age of 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, revealed to The New York Times that he died of pneumonia on April 1.

The Battle with Throat Cancer

Val Kilmer fought a two-year battle with throat cancer after being diagnosed in 2014. The disease took a toll on him, leading to a raspy voice and shortness of breath after undergoing a trachea procedure. Fortunately, he was later declared cancer-free.

Throat cancer is not a single medical term, as it can affect various parts of the throat. The cancer can be found in the pharynx or the head and neck area, which includes the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx.

Head and neck cancers, including throat cancer, are often grouped together. Mouth cancer is the most common type, along with laryngeal cancer, salivary gland cancer, and nasal and sinus cancer.

Signs of Throat Cancer

Throat cancer symptoms can be mistaken for other conditions. Look out for signs like ear pain, persistent sore throat, lump in the neck, difficulty swallowing, voice changes, weight loss, cough, shortness of breath, feeling of something stuck in the throat, sore tongue, and unhealed ulcers or patches in the mouth.

If you experience these symptoms, consult your GP. In the UK, throat cancer, particularly laryngeal cancer, is relatively uncommon, with 2,000-2,400 new cases diagnosed yearly. It is more common in men over 60 years old.
