Blindness in one eye leads to shocking diagnosis

A 32-year-old mother from India, who had never smoked, stunned doctors when she went blind in one eye and was found to be riddled with lung cancer tumors. Despite showing no other symptoms, scans revealed widespread malignant involvement in her body, emphasizing the importance of checking for lung cancer in patients with vision issues.

Unusual case highlights the need for early evaluation

Dr. Alok Pratap Singh from the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences highlighted the necessity of prompt evaluation for lung carcinoma in patients with doubtful intraocular lesions. This case sheds light on a distinct subset of lung malignancy and the importance of early detection.

Leading cause of cancer deaths in the UK

Lung cancer is the UK’s biggest cancer killer, responsible for over 35,000 deaths annually. Surprisingly, around 6,000 non-smokers in the UK are diagnosed with lung cancer each year, accounting for 10% of all cases. Metastatic cancer, where the disease spreads to other parts of the body, can have rare manifestations such as tumors developing in the eyes.

Early signs and diagnosis

The woman sought medical help after experiencing vision loss and occasional flashes of light in her left eye. Despite no pain, redness, or other symptoms, scans revealed growths in her eyes and lower right lung. Further tests confirmed lung carcinoma with choroidal metastasis in both eyes, indicating the cancer had spread to multiple organs.
