THE West was caught asleep at the wheel by Vladimir Putin’s war machine, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will say in a speech tonight.
She will tell diplomats at London’s Mansion House that Nato must lift support for Ukraine with “heavy weapons, tanks and planes”.
Ms Truss is expected to add: “Let’s be honest — the architecture designed to guarantee peace and prosperity has failed.
“If Putin succeeds there will be untold further misery across Europe and terrible consequences across the globe.
“We would never feel safe again.
“So we must be prepared for the long haul and double down on our support for Ukraine.”

Her intervention will pile fresh pressure on Chancellor Rishi Sunak for Budget cash this autumn after a “generation of underinvestment” in troops and intelligence.
Targets for spending two per cent of GDP on defence should be a “floor, not a ceiling”, she will say.
And if the evil dictator is allowed to take Ukraine there will be “further untold misery across Europe” and Britain “would never feel safe again”.
