What Exactly is an Exit Poll?
When it comes to the general election, Brits head to the polls to cast their votes and have their say in who they want to lead the government. But how do we find out who's likely to win before the official results are out? Enter the exit poll.
How Do Exit Polls Work?
Exit polls are conducted at around 133 polling stations across the UK. Voters are asked to fill out a replica polling card after casting their real vote. Tens of thousands participate, providing an early indication of which party might be in the lead. Fieldworkers from Ipsos Mori then analyze the data to predict the outcome.
When Are Exit Polls Released?
Exit poll results are typically released at 10pm, the same time polling stations close. This gives party leaders a snapshot of their performance before official results start rolling in.
Are Exit Polls Accurate?
Exit polls have become more accurate in recent years, but they're not infallible. Mistakes can happen, as seen in the 2015 and 1992 elections. However, the 2019 exit poll came remarkably close to predicting the final outcome, proving its reliability in some cases.
