UK Government proposes major welfare crackdown affecting Brits with mild mental health issues

New welfare measures for Brits with mental health issues

Under a new major welfare crackdown, Brits with mild mental health issues could be advised to seek therapy and return to the office, according to Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride. The government aims to reduce the growing benefits bill and ensure the system is not supporting individuals dealing with everyday challenges.

Proposed changes to disability benefits

The proposed reforms also target disabled individuals, suggesting a shift from fixed cash benefits to vouchers or one-time grants for specific needs like home adaptations. The focus is on updating eligibility criteria for personal independence payments (PIP) to better reflect individuals' daily life challenges.

Green Paper consultation and reactions

The proposals, outlined in a green paper consultation, will be open for feedback for 12 weeks. Chancellor Rishi Sunak views this as the next step in welfare reforms to create a fairer and more targeted benefits system. However, Shadow Cabinet Minister Ellie Reeves criticized the government for potentially using mental health as a divisive issue.
